Snoring or Sleep Apnea?
An Alternative to CPAP
What is Oral Appliance Therapy?
Oral appliance therapy is a non-invasive treatment option for sleep-disordered breathing, such as snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It involves the use of a custom-made device that is worn in the mouth during sleep to help keep the airway open.
The oral appliance is designed to hold the lower jaw in a slightly forward position, which helps to prevent the collapse of the airway that causes snoring and OSA. It is typically made of a durable plastic material and is custom-fitted to the patient's teeth to ensure comfort and effectiveness.
Oral appliance therapy is
often recommended as a first-line treatment for mild to moderate OSA,
often recommended as an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy for patients who cannot tolerate or refuse to use CPAP.
a good option for patients who travel frequently or who do not want to use a bulky and noisy CPAP machine.
The effectiveness of oral appliance therapy depends on the severity of the sleep-disordered breathing, the patient's anatomy, and their ability to wear the appliance comfortably throughout the night. It is important for patients to work closely with their healthcare provider to ensure that the oral appliance is fitting properly and providing the desired therapeutic benefits. Regular follow-up appointments are typically recommended to monitor the effectiveness of the therapy and make any necessary adjustments to the appliance.
