What is Oral Appliance Therapy?

Oral appliance therapy is a type of treatment for obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and other sleep-related breathing disorders. It involves using a custom-made oral appliance, similar to a mouthguard or retainer, that is worn in the mouth during sleep to help keep the airway open and prevent breathing interruptions.

The appliance works by positioning the lower jaw and tongue slightly forward, which can help prevent the collapse of the soft tissues in the back of the throat that can lead to snoring and sleep apnea. Oral appliance therapy is often used as an alternative to continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which involves wearing a mask over the nose and/or mouth that delivers a continuous flow of air to keep the airway open.

Oral appliance therapy is generally considered to be a safe and effective treatment for mild to moderate sleep apnea, and can also be used in combination with CPAP therapy for more severe cases. The specific type of appliance used and the duration of treatment can vary depending on the individual's needs and preferences, and should be determined in consultation with a qualified sleep medicine specialist or dentist.
